Norris was the simple minded curate of the parish of St. Aldhelms. An ugly, misshapen man with a hunchback, Norris had no friend except Father Tanchus - the children of the village stared or teased him, the good wives hid behind doors at his approach, and men averted their gaze when they passed him. He spent most of his time scrupulously cleaning the church and yard, although he took the occasional walk in the nearby wood to feed the animals, with whom he sometimes imagined himself able to converse. He died in a mysterious accident in the spring of 1239, when he slipped on a toad by the river and dashed his brains out on a rock. Tanchus, deep in the grip of the Diablopsuche's heresy, did not perform Christian rites at his burial, and Norris later returned as a monstrous ghoul.
