Filius of Malacis, Hastus is an inventive genius and master craftsman who specialises in the forging of magical swords. He joined the New Council of Calebais in the Winter of 1228, and constructed the Five Towers which stand around the Well. Hastus seems generally good natured, but is rarely seen outside the sweltering heat of his forge, where he cheerfully conducts one dangerous experiment after another. His team of assistants include Edward of York, who trained alongside Hastus under Malacis but was maimed in a magical accident which irreparably damaged his Gift, and Herrick, a hedge wizard who seeks to join the Order of Hermes under Hastus' patronage. Hastus assumed control of the Covenant from Gurgeh in 1239, and with the Council's consent appointed himself Rector. Using powerful enchantments, he bound the ghosts of Calebais into his sword, emptying the cursed ruins of spirits and claiming the Bell of Ibyn, a great feat which has drawn attention from all over the Tribunal and beyond.
